M.Tech VLSI Program

ICFAI Tech School (Faculty of Science & Technology), IFHE Hyderabad offers M.Tech. - VLSI on two year (full-time) and three year (part-time) modes. Advances in VLSI have today enabled most systems to become compact, highly reliable and deliver data at high speed. The requirement of improved solutions for miniaturization, high speed, reliability, and high performance computers, necessitates skilled engineers. There is an urgent need to produce quality engineers who can conceive, design and develop VLSI systems.

The Program aims at preparing students to develop knowledge and skills in VLSI design methodology with systems perspective in order to facilitate the use of computer-aided design tools for the analysis and design of special-purpose digital and analog circuits and systems. The Program will help students understand the requirements of EDA development, library design, analog and mixed signal design, semiconductor chip design, design and verification of ICs, FPGA development and SOC design. Analysis, design and implementation of integrated circuits using standard tools.

The VLSI Program will focus on the development of hands-on skills in designing semiconductor devices and circuits, architecting systems using embedded components such as CPU, memory and peripherals. Students will learn several topics starting from the lowest level of physical devices to the top level of application development involving FPGA and ASICS.

  • To develop engineers trained in both hardware and design tools VLSI.
  • To disseminate VLSI design including both the low level circuit and high level algorithmic details.

Eligibility Pass with minimum 60% or equivalent in Bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Communication / Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering / Instrumentation Technology / Telecommunication Engineering / Electrical & Electronics / AMIE in appropriate branch mentioned above.

Unique Features
  • The program curriculum is aimed at VLSI System Design (both Front end & Back end designs) covering Algorithms, Hardware description languages, System architectures, Physical designs, Verification techniques, Simulation & synthesis, Low power design techniques and Mixed mode design methodologies.
  • Students will have access to well equipped VLSI Lab set-up with industrial collaboration.
  • The University is having collaboration with Industry giants Mentor Graphics, Xilinx, etc.
  • All students are assigned a designated supervisor, an academic member of staff who will provide formal supervision and support on a daily basis.

The elective courses are chosen in consultation with the thesis supervisor to match the interest of student as well as the requirements of the project work. Program Structure (Part-time)
The three year program is organized into six semesters. Every student is required to take a minimum of 6 elective courses in the third, fourth and fifth semesters. The elective courses are chosen in consultation with the thesis supervisor to match the interest of student as well as the requirements of the project work. The sixth semester is dedicated to the project work. Classes for part-time students will be held on weekends.

How is VLSI different from Software?
VLSI is about designing microprocessors and integrated circuits (ICs) like Modems, Networking chipsets, Telecom chipsets, Graphics chipsets, Memories for computers, etc. IC’s which have multi-million transistors in them are classified as VLSI chips or VLSI designs. Whereas Software is about developing software applications involving coding, testing and programming.

Career Opportunities
VLSI offers great opportunities in chip design in the areas of ASIC, FPGA design and Custom Layout design. The job opportunities are in front end- RTL design and Coding, Verification, Synthesis, Implementation, Static Time Analysis, and Design for Test. The back end jobs are - Physical design, Custom Layout, Place and Route.

GATE / ICFAI Master’s Entrance Exam (IMEE 2017) Qualified candidates are eligible.
Candidates who have Qualified in GATE (2015 onwards) need not write the ICFAI Master’s Entrance Exam 2017. They can directly appear for Interview.

IMEE 2017:
ICFAI Master’s Entrance Examination (IMEE 2017) is an aptitude test conducted by ITS, IFHE, for students seeking admission into the PG Programs of ICFAI Tech School. The test is of one hour duration. The question paper consists of 50 multiple choice questions with duration of 60 minutes.

M.Tech (VLSI): Syllabus as per GATE-ECE

Section 1: Verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning. (Refer to GRE syllabus); Section 2: Basic programming skills in programming languages (C/C++); Section 3: Mathematics/ Probability and Statistics.

Personal Interview
Candidates based on the performance in GATE (from 2015 onwards) / IMEE 2017 will be called for Personal Interview at ICFAI Tech School, IFHE, Hyderabad on July 21 & 22, 2017.

The question paper will be divided into two parts of 100 marks each.

Part-A is common to all subjects. There will be one precise writing followed by MCQs in Basic Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Awareness in Computers.

Part-B contains MCQs in the subject studied at the Masters level.
